Have you ever felt uncertain about your skills or questioned your value? Ever aimed for a goal, only to hear those subtle voices saying it’s beyond reach? You’re not alone. A recent HBR article, made me realise again how relevant overcoming limiting beliefs remains, as these beliefs keep returning. These moments of self-doubt can be counterproductive. Surprisingly, I sometimes delay writing tasks, fearing criticism. I call it my writers block, but that might just be a bad excuse. Many entrepreneurs, like myself, struggle with overcoming limiting beliefs, which can become deeply rooted. Yet, with the right tools and guidance, reshaping these beliefs is within reach.
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.” – Henry Ford
This quote by Henry Ford nicely captures the essence of how our beliefs, especially the limiting ones, can shape our actions and outcomes. It emphasises the power of mindset and how one’s beliefs can either propel them forward or hold them back.

Understanding Limiting Beliefs
At their core, limiting beliefs are deeply held convictions that constrain our potential. They’re often based on past experiences, societal norms, or personal fears. For instance, thinking “I’m not good enough” or “People like me don’t succeed” are classic examples. These beliefs can be subtle, yet they shape our actions and decisions, often holding us back from pursuing our dreams.
According to Tony Robbins’ website, “Limiting beliefs are the stories we tell ourselves about who we are that hold us back from becoming who we are meant to be. These beliefs limit us from reaching our full potential. They are often subconscious – we don’t even know that we have them until someone points them out to us.”
To further highlight the prevalence of these limiting beliefs, especially in leadership roles, a Gartner study found that more than half of the 2,800 leaders surveyed lacked confidence in their ability to lead their organisation into the future. This statistic underscores the importance of recognising and addressing these beliefs.
Overcoming Limiting Beliefs Head-On
In my initial years, expressing my thoughts was a challenge, like trying to climb a high mountain. Can you relate? Life often pushes us to face our fears. For me, establishing a student union during university was transformative. It honed my leadership skills. Ever been gently pushed out of your comfort zone, discovering newfound strengths?
Embracing Opportunities
As I advanced in my profession, leadership opportunities emerged. The familiar self-doubts returned. Yet, taking on these roles led to unexpected achievements. Have you tackled a challenge and been pleasantly surprised?
Starting my business was a mix of excitement and worry. With persistence, I navigated the hurdles and established a thriving enterprise. Are your ambitions clouded by doubts? Proving you can achieve something that appeared to be impossible at first, is probably one of the best ways to overcome your limiting beliefs.
Changing the Perspective
Limiting beliefs, though challenging, shouldn’t be seen as unbeatable obstacles. By shifting our viewpoint, we can treat them as challenges ready to be tackled, unveiling a realm of personal and professional growth opportunities.
Seeing the Bigger Picture: Rather than treating limiting beliefs as absolute truths, view them as perceptions moulded by past events. This shift allows us to question and reshape these beliefs.
The Power of Positivity: Adopting a positive mindset can be transformative. It equips us to face challenges with hope and resilience, turning potential hurdles into lessons.
Pathways to Transformation:
- Awareness: Identifying our limiting beliefs is the initial step towards addressing them. Self-reflection supports this process. Dedicate time for introspection. Ask: What beliefs are restricting me? Do they genuinely mirror my abilities?
- Evaluation: Understand where these beliefs stem from. Are they based on real evidence or influenced by past experiences and fears? Journaling might be a way to gain this clarity: Keep a diary to note moments of self-doubt. Over time, you might spot patterns or triggers, aiding in addressing the core issue.
- Repositioning: Altering our internal dialogue can be impactful. Instead of giving in to negative thoughts, challenge them and substitute with empowering statements. Consider introducing an Affirmation Practice: Begin your day with uplifting affirmations. For example, swap “I can’t handle this project” with “I’ve tackled challenges before, and I can do it again”.
- Consultation: Open discussions with mentors, colleagues, or experts can offer new viewpoints and methods to conquer limiting beliefs. Connect with individuals who’ve faced similar challenges and have successfully navigated them. Their insights can be invaluable.
- Professional Counselling: For deeply rooted beliefs, professional help might be beneficial. Therapists can offer tools and techniques to address and move past these beliefs.
While limiting beliefs can present challenges, they’re not unbeatable. With the right strategies and support, we can reshape these beliefs, setting the stage for success and contentment.
